This studio, conducted entirely online, approached a malleable arts-oriented civic program for the Municipal Arts Society of New York and neighboring organizations, sited at the northwest corner of Washington Square Park. The building houses permanent and rental offices for MAS, an arts bookstore, performance and gallery space, a rooftop cafe, and packs essential services and primary circulation into two stable cores. Floors proximate to the ground arrange impermanent walls or sloping floors within a stable column-and-beam bay system, while upper office spaces nest queerly twisted volumes into this exposed skeleton, producing interior and exterior gaps that confuse and filter voices, light, and access among neighboring work and event spaces. The main question it asks is how a new building might anticipate its future reconfiguration culturally, structurally, and aesthetically.
